Tallest bed in the free world

So Nick and I have put together the tallest bed in the free world. Here's the deal:

I bought two flat and long plastic tubs to alleviate all the crap that we have around the apartment. I wanted to put it in the tubs and shove it under the guest bed. But when I bought the tubs home, I found out that they wouldn't fit under the bed. At all.

So, I did what any bored engineer would do. I went to Lowe's, spent $56 and brought home some 2x4s, hardware and casters.

(In the Volvo wagon, no less. Which was absolutely brilliant. You see, I have childhood memories of us bringing home 2x4s in a Chevy Celebrity. This involved angling the boards through the car and then sitting awkwardly with them hanging out the window. Asim shall not have such problems.)

Anyway, so I borrowed some tools from my boss, called up Nick, and we got to chopping and drilling. I would have taken photos of that process, but it would have slowed things up too much. As it stands, the whole bit took two hours to build. Frankly, I was surprised that nobody asked us just what the hell we were doing (we worked in the garage I'm renting) at 10 p.m., powersawing and drilling and whatnot.

You can see the photos on the ol' Flickr account (link on right). Yes, the bed is high. But it's fulfilled its purpose of not only covering the tubs, but covering them two-high. I shall have to buy some more now. I really want to put a lot of stuff under there and free up some closets. And yes, we shall take this bed to the new place ... I should also mention that I made the bed so it's easy to take apart -- eight bolts, four main pieces, four small slats. The holes for the bolts weren't exactly drilled straight (whatever) so some of the bolts had to be persuaded in with the hammer. And there was only a little splintering of wood. Nothing structural ... I think.

To give you an idea how tall this bed is, note that when I sit on the bed (I'm like, what, 6-1?) my feet are very much off the floor. I have been sleeping on this guest bed since Maria left (whatever) so tonight should be a fun little trial as I maybe fall off and hurt myself from altitude.
